Director, Engineering, Automation & Control Solutions - (Lod, Israel)

The Director of Engineering for the Automation & Control Solutions (A&CS) team in MKS Instruments provides leadership to the dispersed 30+ person engineering teams throughout the development of new products and core technologies for our automation and control solutions product lines (automation controllers, I/O controllers, temperature controllers, data analytics, and software automation platforms). The candidate directs and manages a diverse global team of multiple subordinate managers and high level individual contributors designing and developing engineering solutions utilizing multiple engineering disciplines for products, systems, software, and solutions (including electrical hardware design, FPGA design, embedded firmware design, software design, mechanical design, and test engineering functions), within defined requirements for development schedule, product cost, and technical performance in support of our most critical business objectives. The candidate must be able to direct the day to day activities in a fast-paced, dynamic, global, highly technical setting, and successfully interact with customers and other MKS functional organizations in a matrix work environment. The candidate will be responsible for creating and communicating technical strategies, development roadmaps, and building/recruiting world class engineering teams./p>

Position Details:

  • Provide direct and ongoing strategic and customer focused leadership to cross-functional teams consisting of engineering, product management, quality, reliability, manufacturing, service, and procurement functions to develop optimal solutions to tradeoffs inherent in the product realization process in a competitive market
  • Plan, manage, and optimize end-to-end delivery lifecycle for product releases from evaluating, prototyping, design, development, release, maintenance, support, service, and to end of life
  • Manages headcount, deliverables, schedules, and costs for the organization, ensuring that resources are appropriately allocated and that goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets are met in accordance with organizational metrics and business plans
  • Engages with product management and product owners, supply chain, technical leaders, and executives to communicate program status, escalate issues, and guide and influence strategic decision-making
  • Manages senior relationships and escalates issues with outsourced partners and suppliers, including setting expectations regarding deliverables, product quality, schedules, and costs
  • Ensures organization is effectively leveraging outsourced resources
  • Promote the development of technical innovations that provide a true competitive advantage for our products while keeping abreast of industry trends and technical development roadmaps
  • Recruit, select, develop, coach, and evaluate personnel to ensure the efficient operation of all engineering functions. Sets and monitors annual performance plans, coaching, and career development
  • Identifies opportunities for and drives organizational initiatives and programs to support business process improvements and costs reductions
  • Drives and fosters organization-wide performance standards, expectations, and practices to support ongoing team member and process development
  • Perform problem solving as required to meet objectives in spite of setbacks.


  • Engineering degree (BSEE, MSEE preferred) with 15+ years of product development experience in a lead role and a track record of successful product launches, including 10 years of people management experience
  • 5+ years' experience in Agile/Lean product development and guiding continuous improvement. Provides training on Agile/Lean practices and methodologies. Drives elimination of inefficiencies in the development process. Actively embraces new methods and practices that increase efficiency and effectiveness
  • 3+ years' experience managing remote and virtual teams
  • 3+ years' experience working with outsourced vendors and partners to build a collaborative network to impact areas beyond the development organization
  • Creates a culture of customer focus, quality first, test first methodologies, and high performance to drive innovation
  • Solid grasp of engineering development processes (electrical hardware, FPGA design, embedded firmware, software, and mechanical hardware,) and test methods including BKMs for use during product development
  • Strong analytical skills in electrical and software engineering related disciplines with prior cross-disciplinary exposure to product verification testing and manufacturing process development
  • Knowledge and "hands-on" experience in embedded hardware and software design, real time operating systems, along with experience in design for cost principles
  • Strong leadership skills, including coaching, team-building, and conflict resolution with the ability to manage human capital across multiple geographies and organizations to drive workforce development and achieve desired results
  • Strong documentation, presentation, written, and verbal communication in English and Hebrew and a proven ability to interact with a sophisticated, highly technical customer base
  • Organizational and strategic management skills, including budget, business planning, and forecasting
  • Advanced relationship management skills, including partnering and consulting with senior management and executives roles for internal and external partners
